Poem - Tails Up

What could seem as worthless
as a tails up penny on the street?
A coin struggling to find its purpose.
A coin nearly embedded in the concrete.

For it's been trampled, thoughtlessly.
But watch now, as it's kicked thither!
It hops and bounces and ceaselessly
rolls into the murky waters of the sewer.

Ignored only for it's false cover,
because, if only its head were up,
could it attract a genuine lover.
But now it's masked by a grimy syrup.

It's true worth is lost in the unforgiving sea.
And although people believe it to be
worth less than it's cousins, the nickel and dime,
it'd still like a chance to shine.

It's a sad thing, nobody would ever know
that this penny is one made of true wheat.
A 1943*, a real mistake, but for one lucky fellow,
this copper penny would be one hell of a treat.

*A 1943 penny is worth around $60,000 to $80,000.
